Our annual Open Days are a great opportunity to be updated on the genetic progress being made by the Merinotech nucleus and Ram Breeding Centre flocks as well as to hear from guest speakers.

This year’s Open Day will centre around the theme of “Optimising the Merino for the new reality”.
- Ashley Herbert, Agrarian, will present an enterprise-level case for rethinking how young sheep are managed in WA.
- Mark Ferguson, neXtgen Agri, will focus on growth, lamb survival, labour reduction and welfare as the four pillars of the modern Merino, discuss where genetics are heading and why it matters for commercial producers, plus introduce the SHIELD project and what it means for the next generation of Merino breeding values.
- John Young, Farming Systems Analysis Service, will cover decisions around joining ewe lambs, including strategies and tactics for economic success.
- Sarah Preston, SwabTec, will deliver a deep dive into the science of genetics for worm resistance, how the WabSwab saliva test works, what the data shows, and how producers can start selecting for resistance now, along with an introduction into clostridial resistance testing.
- Michael Young, Farm Optimisation Group, will present on successfully finishing wether lambs, including targets, tools and trade-offs.
- Amy Lockwood, neXtgen Agri, will deliver an update on Merinotech including performance, genetic progress and how the Open Day themes are being embedded in the breeding program going forward.
