Breeding Merinos for the Future

Merinotech is part of the coming revolution in Merino breeding ~ a revolution that will turn upside down many long-held perceptions and beliefs about sheep breeding, but that will also reinforce the value and strength of some traditional approaches and insights.
The Merinotech approach to breeding better and better Merino sheep is based on the same principles as LAMBPLAN:

  • Careful consideration of what traits to breed for and their relative importance,
  • Use of good data ~ the right records on the majority of animals plus sound pedigree information,
  • Using road-tested genetic technology to turn data into information ~ EBVs and Selection Index values,
  • Generating high rates of genetic progress through rapid use of structurally sound animals identified as having high genetic merit.

Breeders using LAMBPLAN across a very wide range of breeds, following these simple principles, are achieving very high rates of genetic improvement ~ and that includes Merinos for wool and meat traits.

LAMBPLAN continues to develop tools to help breeders in their businesses, such as Total Genetic Resources Management (TGRM) and the LAMBPLAN Structural Traits EBVs.
